As part of Ellenbrook Secondary College’s commitment to excellence and supporting the success of our students, the college is proud to offer a specialised STEM Program. The STEM Program is a three-year program from Year 7 to Year 9.
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into one cohesive learning model that focuses on real-world examples and project-based learning. Unlike traditional teaching models where subjects are taught independently, the STEM Program supports our students’ natural curiosity and creativity and helps them understand how each discipline is connected and applied in the real world. In our fast-developing, high-tech world, subjects are not used separately but are integrated, with multiple disciplines needed to solve real-world problems.
The STEM Program at Ellenbrook Secondary College provides students with hands-on learning experiences that develop their problem-solving, creativity, and critical-thinking skills.
- Year 7: Students are introduced to coding and game development, using block coding and Scratch. They also explore the engineering design process through hands-on projects, including the development of light boxes and robotics.
- Year 8: Students further their coding skills by learning Python, gaining a deeper understanding of programming. They continue to explore the engineering design process through projects such as designing and building wind turbines to investigate renewable energy and constructing hydraulic bridges to learn about mechanical systems and forces in engineering.
- Year 9: Students build on their coding skills by developing games using Python. They also advance their understanding of robotics and drones, applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Students will utilise drones and create drone obstacle courses to simulate real-world applications, such as search and rescue missions and automated deliveries.
Ellenbrook Secondary College collaborates with local primary schools to run STEM incursions, providing younger students with engaging, hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
As part of this initiative, we offer the STEM Warriors Program, which aims to engage Year 5 and 6 students in STEM. This program runs workshops in Term 4, where students participate in exciting STEM challenges and activities led by our staff and students. The goal is to spark curiosity, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence in STEM learning before transitioning to high school.
