Languages

The study of a language is compulsory for students in Years 7 and 8 at Ellenbrook Secondary College, as mandated by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.

Students benefit from a range of enriching experiences both inside and outside the classroom. They engage in interactive activities, as well as incursions and excursions that provide immersive exposure to the Indonesian language and culture. Our teaching and learning programs are designed to inspire students to reach their full potential in communicating in the target language.

In alignment with the most commonly taught language in the catchment primary schools, the College offers Indonesian language starting in Year 7.

Indonesian Language

This course equips students with foundational communication skills in Indonesian, promotes intercultural understanding, and highlights the connection between language and culture.

Students develop core skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They interact with their teacher and peers to exchange information about familiar topics such as family, school life, and hobbies. Through individual and collaborative activities, students engage in real-world communication tasks – from making plans to responding to creative texts – while deepening their understanding of Indonesian culture.

As they progress, students broaden their vocabulary and grammar, improve pronunciation, and gain confidence in expressing ideas. With ongoing support, they begin to apply their language skills independently and meaningfully across a range of contexts.

The Indonesian Language course is delivered by a native Indonesian speaker, who also facilitates the Lingo Hub – an after-school workshop for students interested in learning or improving their skills in a variety of languages.
