Technologies

Our Technologies curriculum is designed to foster enterprising, forward-thinking individuals who can make informed decisions about the development and application of technology in society. We aim to empower students to think critically and creatively, work both independently and collaboratively, and develop innovative solutions to complex challenges. A strong emphasis is also placed on contributing to sustainable ways of living.

Students in Technologies are encouraged to plan and manage projects in collaborative environments. Assessment is primarily based on creative design tasks that require students to investigate, generate, produce, and evaluate solutions.

The Technologies learning area is divided into three main disciplines:

  1. Design and Technologies
  2. Digital Technologies
  3. Home Economics

Design and Technologies

Ellenbrook Secondary College’s Design and Technologies program offers a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience from Years 7 through 12, focusing on the design and manufacture of products using materials such as wood, metal, and plastics. Students develop essential skills in material manipulation, processing, manufacturing, and design fundamentals, preparing them for various pathways in trades, engineering, and design-based careers.

In Years 7 and 8, students are introduced to foundational concepts, including workshop safety, procedures, and the design process. They engage in projects that incorporate Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software like Corel, gain exposure to Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment, and explore basic electronics.

During Years 9 and 10, students can select from elective subjects that build upon their Year 7 experiences. These electives may include woodwork, metalwork, coding, and computer science. The curriculum emphasizes both the creation of tangible products and a deeper understanding of material properties and design principles.

In the senior years, students have the opportunity to pursue nationally recognized Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificate qualifications alongside General Courses. The courses are designed to extend students’ interests and abilities in specialised areas, combining hands-on learning with real-world applications. These programs are industry-endorsed and recognised by TAFE, providing students with valuable pathways into further education, apprenticeship, or direct entry into the workforce.

Through its structured and progressive Design and Technologies curriculum, Ellenbrook Secondary College ensures that students are well-prepared to navigate and contribute to the fields of design, technology, and engineering with confidence and competence.
