Gifted and Talented (GATE) Academic Program

Ellenbrook Secondary College is one of the Western Australian public secondary schools offering a Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Academic Program.

These programs focus on rigorous studies in Science, English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences. Students benefit from being exposed to a differentiated curriculum designed to stimulate and develop the individual’s skills in inquiry, analytical and critical thinking, communication and creativity.

Our academically focused learning environment is intellectually challenging and designed to inspire students to expand their knowledge, deepen their understanding, and apply their skills effectively. It fosters lifelong learning and personal growth. Students selected for this program will have achieved high scores in the competitive Academic Selective Entrance Test, administered by the Department of Education.

Program Entry

For specific dates, please refer to the WA Education Department website.

  • In October or November, representatives from the Education Department hold a general information evening for parents of Year 5 students about the Selective Academic Program.
  • Online registration for the Year 6 Entry Test is open from November to January of the following year.
  • Students sit four tests designed to assess academic potential.
  • All selections are made centrally by the Department of Education. The school does not participate in the selection process.

Top-Up Testing

Students may have the opportunity to enter the program after Year 6 if vacancies arise. However, places are highly limited, typically only one or two per year. Students in older year groups (e.g., Year 8 and 9) can sit the GAT test in March for potential entry.

Senior School Gifted and Talented

Students in Years 7–10 are placed in dedicated Gifted and Talented classes. In Years 11 and 12, they transition into mainstream classes while receiving ongoing support. A dedicated coordinator provides both intellectual and emotional guidance, and students may have access to after-school tuition and revision sessions leading up to examinations.
